| Abstract | The frontal systems behaviour and the climatological frequency over a region is a very important subject, due to the intense changes in weather conditions. The zonal fronts are the main synoptic systems over South America and are responsible for large amounts of rain and cold air intrusions. In this study, a climatology of frontal systems is performed, using the following criterium: reduction in temperature at 925 hPa, increase of sea surface pressure and change in the meridional wind at 925 hPa, in two consecutive days, in 11 areas of South America, mainly in Brazil. The frontal systems were classified according to their displacement over Brazil, in all seasons, from 1980 to 2002. The atmospheric patterns were analysed when the systems reached only areas to the southern Brazil and were displaced toward the ocean; those which reached southern, southeastern, and southern Bahia, by the coast; those which reached southeastern and central Brazil, and those which were displaced over all these areas. Considering the climatology, there was a reduction in frequency of frontal systems in lower latitudes and in the summer. The atmospheric patterns were related to the intensity of sea surface pressure, intensity and position of troughs associated with the systems, and vorticity advection. RESUMO: Este artigo descreve o Sistema de Distribuição de dados meteorológicos pela Internet (Internet Data Distribution), projeto coordenado pelo Unidata Program Center (UPC/UCAR), e a experiência de três instituições brasileiras que o adotaram: O LPM/UFRJ, o IAG/USP, e o CPTEC/INPE. Este sistema foi adotado por inúmeras universidades e centros de pesquisa nos Estados Unidos e no Canadá, e com ele é possível obter, sem custo, todo tipo de dados de interesse meteorológico para fins de ensino e pesquisa. Além disso, este sistema pode ser encarado como um sistema integrado, que provê facilidades para aquisição de dados, decodificação, análise e geração de produtos. Exemplos de produtos gerados com os pacotes de análise e uma avaliação da cobertura temporal e espacial dos dados distribuídos também estão incluídos neste trabalho. |
